Erectile dysfunction (ED) may be a difficult topic to discuss; however, it shouldn’t be ignored. In my practice, I see men having difficulties getting and maintaining an erection as early as 40-years of age. This is not normal at any age; however, it is now even affecting younger men. The National Institute of Health (NIH) reports 30 million men are affected by ED. It is not unusual to have some occasional impotence, but when it occurs more than 50% of the time, it is considered a problem.
Some Possible Causes
- Sleep deprivation affects sexual performance. Even though most people think they can get away with less sleep, biologically adults require 8-10 hours every night.
- It’s been an ongoing debate as to whether viewing pornography psychologically affects men’s ability to perform. From what I see in my office, it is a problem and should be avoided. Looking at Playboy magazines is far different than looking at porn today. It is degrading to humanity and takes away the emotional connection between people becoming mechanical, decreasing relationship quality.
- Atherosclerosis or plaque accumulation in the arteries. Veins inadequate for proper blood flow usually resulting from diabetes pathology.
- Excessive alcohol consumption.
- Medication’s side effects.
- Pelvic floor weakness or congestion.
- High toxic load to body.
Clinically, I have seen a dramatic increase in ED. It could be men are more willing to talk about it and are interested in treating the cause, instead of just taking Viagra® or some other drug. Not only do I see an overall increase, but I also see it affecting younger men. I know several older men who were raised on healthy food 70-80 years ago—exposed to very few medications including vaccines—who still have a strong drive and performance.
This is another self-inflicted problem due to our compulsions to rely on medications to treat every little ailment. In addition, poor nutrition is a factor, due to the typical American diet.
However, for men willing to work to improve their health (e.g., improve their diet, take supplements to clean their arteries, eliminate unnecessary medications, take Omega 3s, etc., and increase their sleep, consider our detox program), their performance starts to return. We also recommend walking daily and visceral manipulation to release any pelvic congestion and support the pelvic floor muscles. Visceral manipulation usually requires 3-6 treatments.
Sex is an important part of being human. It doesn’t have to be difficult if we allow the body to get back into balance by treating the cause and supporting function in a healthier way.
